Washington, D.C.: The Nation’s Capital

I’m finally writing about my trip to Washington dc. I had an amazing time while I was there on an extended weekend. I was there for my sorority’s convention so getting to do everything in a shirt amount of time took great planning and execution. So let’s begin this journey shall we.

My line sister and I flew from New Orleans to DC. We had a straight flight on US Airways. It was my first time flying the airline. The planes were nice and definitely updated. I actually will be flying US Airways to NYC in a few weeks. So upon arrival we bought metro fare cards to use to get around for the next few days. We put $10 on our fare card and that lasted us until Monday morning when we left in which we had to add a few more dollars to get to the airport. The first place we ate at in DC is a soul food restaurant near the campus of Howard University. The quaint place was Florida Ave Grill. The food was good and definitely gave you more than enough for your money. After lunch we took a nap before our journey began.

Before we left BR, we looked up the cost for renting a bike to bike around while we see the monuments. We were not given all the information so I will share with you all now. We were going to go with capital bike sharing which are red bikes and they are literally located everywhere throughout the city. In order to not have a $102 hold on your card for up to 7 days it is best to order the membership key at least 2 weeks in advance before your trip. We opted to walk around to the monuments which gave us great exercise anyway. We took the metro from Howard’s campus (where we stayed at a friend’s apartment) to the monuments. We started with the Washington Memorial. Unfortunately, construction was being done so we could not get a great picture of the monument. We made our way to the Korean War Memorial, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and of course the White House. There’s so much I can say about everything. I believe that everyone should take a trip to the memorials as it gives so much history including famous quotes and speeches made from the individuals as well as statues. This was my first time back to DC (other than a layover) in 10 years and I appreciated every single aspect of the monuments and memorials. The best thing is they are all free. If someone is ever trying to sell you a tour, opt out , get the bikes and go for free. One tidbit about the bikes are that the first 30 minutes are free. Therefore you would only pay the rental fee if you get to your destination in less than 30 minutes which is totally possible because we did walking. After our walking tour and great pictures, we ended our journey at the White House for some great nighttime shots. We then went to eat at the best restaurant we ate at the entire time we were there well that and another one which happens to be owned by the same people. Eatonville in DC was beyond words can describe. The food was impeccable and priced great. It was a Friday night so we had the pleasure of having a singer perform which reminded me of a jazz club atmosphere in New Orleans which really made me feel right at home.

Saturday we walked around chinatown and toured the American History Museum. During our excursion we saw a Living Social store which definitely made me excited as it is one of my favorite apps on the iPhone. We then made our way to the museum. It was so nice walking down memory lane and seeing history. From the beginning of GM to food markets to the First Ladies gowns to the Presidents history, it had everything you could ever imagine. The best part is that it is free. DC is a relatively inexpensive trip since so much is free, it’s just a matter of getting there. After the museum tour, we met with more line sisters to eat at the W in DC. The view from the patio is more than words could ever say. It has a view of the White House and the monuments and memorials. I enjoyed ever second while I was there. The food was also amazing there.

Sunday was a day of Greek life so to say. We bought things from the vendors and toured Howard’s campus. We got amazing pictures at the university. Our DC excursion wasn’t quite over with just yet as we ate at Busboys and Poets. The food there was also amazing in which we found out that the same owners owned Eatonville too. I just have to say how mouth watering and delicious the collard greens were at both restaurants. My mouth is watering thinking about it.

DC has some of the most amazing food. I enjoyed every single moment of my trip. It was one for the books and would not change my experience there. It was the perfect weekend. I truly feel like I could go back there in a month and see a totally different DC and still have an incredible time. It is definitely a trip I recommend for families especially children. It is a history lesson brought to life. While in DC we took the bus, metro, and taxi to get around and spent about $30 total a piece on transportation. I hope you enjoyed my journey to DC. I have a few weeks off then I will be heading to Orange Beach, AL then NYC the following weekend. My travel for the summer is coming to a close and I hope you have enjoyed my journey. As always any questions feel free to ask or email. Have a wonderful week!!
